Pests And Winter

When most people think about pests and winter, they breathe a sigh of relief. At last, those annoying critters are sleeping through the cold months and won’t bother us.

Wrong!

There are many pests who don’t sleep through the winter. Instead, they seek out warm places to live where they might have access to plenty of food.

Guess where they look first: Your home!

Pests and winter too often mean pests in your home. They enter your attic spaces in the coldest months and settle in ‘til spring warms the outside. In some areas of the country, this doesn’t happen until January. But an early cold spell can drive them indoors, just like it does many people. And once they get into your home, they’re not likely to leave until spring.

These pests will make your home their own. They’ll store food, use your insulation and even stored clothing as nesting material, and possibly have their young there.

It’s not uncommon for squirrels, mice, raccoons, even snakes to make their homes in your home. If snakes get into your crawl spaces, your attics, or your basements, they may get more active due to the warmth they find there.

Squirrels can fall down or jump down your chimney in their effort to find a warm place. If this happens, they may get out of the fireplace and actually in your home. Raccoons can live on the ledge right behind your damper in your fireplace that isn’t used. They can easily climb up and down the chimney.

What can you do? There are some things you can do yourself to make your home less inviting to pests. Put a cap on your chimney. This will keep pests out and will allow smoke to escape. Seal up all the holes you can find around your home. Don’t leave food outdoors. Make sure trash cans are sealed closely.
